Business & Economy

A strong economy is the best regional policy and one of the foundations of our community. We must safeguard existing industries, including agriculture, while supporting new opportunities. This is how we ensure a strong community for the future.

Tourism is our major industry and should create opportunities in the municipality, not just more traffic. Development must be sensible and reflect the unique character of the area. Rangárþing eystra is one of Iceland’s strongest agricultural districts. We want to ensure it stays that way and that opportunities to strengthen the sector are fully utilised.

  • The municipality must be ready to assist, inform, educate and support individual initiative in all economic development
  • Systematically lower property taxes on commercial and industrial buildings
  • Have diverse commercial and service plots available for development in both urban and rural areas
  • Keep development charges for commercial plots reasonable
  • Increase information sharing regarding access to innovation funding
  • Begin development of Hvolsvöllur town centre during the electoral term to diversify economic activity
  • Start development at Hamragarðar according to the current detailed plan
  • Continue strong emphasis on location-independent jobs. Always be ready to welcome public sector jobs and strengthen public services locally
  • Increase focus on completing a joint economic strategy for municipalities in Rangárvallasýsla
  • Continue advocating for increased use of Landeyjahöfn harbour
